Northern California Wine Country – St Helena

The move Sideways with Paul Giamatta is hilarious and one of my fav films. It’s based in Solvang, California and spurred a new wave of wine-tasting-tourism. There was even a Sideways wine tasting bus tours starting at the Hitching Post (featured in the film) through the town.  It also had a major negative impact on Merlot. If you’ve seen the film you know the famous line and what I’m taking about. Hilarious.  During my time living in Northern California, I explored wine country and all the usual spots, Napa, Sanoma, Oakville and Rutherford: however, I never stumbled upon St. Helena. A charming hidden gem of a wine town located in the northernmost area of Napa County. It is home to more wineries than any other town in Napa. Probably a good chance that if I had found St. Helena while living in S.F. I would have adopted it as my second home.  It took me moving to Saint Louis, attending a charity event and winning a silent auction to discover my new favorite N. Cali wine town. My wife and I won a three-night weekend get-away to staying in a bungalow nestled amongst the vines of a small local St. Helena vineyard. It was truly an amazing experience and highly recommend visiting this area of N. California. Even if you are not a wine-person there is plenty to do: hiking, biking, shopping and relaxing.  For those of you that enjoy wine you likely have heard of theses wineries located in an around St. Helena. If not, check them out. Amazing wine.
